Meet the Staff at Book Culture on Columbus: Chris Doeblin
I am married and raising twin 9 year old girls. Our family lives on the Upper West Side where our children attend public school. I began work in the book business in the early 80’s at Papyrus, now Book Culture on Broadway. I spent many years managing Book Forum on Broadway in the 90’s and then co-founded Great Jones Books, a wholesale remainder business. Later we opened Labyrinth Books in 1997 which became Book Culture when we spun off from the Great Jones Corp 10 years ago.
What is your role as the Owner and Managing Partner of Book Culture?
I am the managing partner for the store and oversee all of it’s operations.
What are your areas of expertise?
I don’t claim any expertise- but so far whenever anything is broken- I’ve found a way to get it working again or get it replaced.
What are you currently reading?
Ladies’ Paradise by Emile Zola. It’s all about a big store opening and running in Paris. It’s about a new way of retailing and the changes it brings to those close to it.
What are you looking forward to most at Book Culture on Columbus?
I hope more than anything to witness the quiet enjoyment of our shelves and tables of books by visitors, neighbors and families, to see people reading and talking about books and enjoying our space that we have given so much to produce.
