Neighborhood Watch :: Word Up Community Bookshop Reopens July 26

Word Up Community Bookshop is a week away from reopening their doors at their new location; 2113 Amsterdam Ave. On July 26th at 6pm Word Up will be hosting their grand opening party.

Word Up is a volunteer based community/multi-lingual bookshop/art space/ discussion spot originally expected to be a month-long popup in Washington Heights. Their goal with a community bookshop is to help enable community members to live a more expressive life through the reciprocal exchange of books. Word Up is dedicated to bringing a literary, arts, film, and music space to their uptown community. Veronica Liu, one of the founding members of Word Up, noted in an interview with Melville House the growing, diverse population of Washington Heights as one of the motivating factors to want to create a community bookshop. With so many young children and families moving further north in Manhattan, Liu felt the two function branches of the New York Public Library above 145h Street was not enough. And we couldn’t agree enough.

If you have a moment, make the trip uptown to check out this great spot.
