Tom Weiner reads Called to Serve
On Friday, October 26th at 7pm Tom Weiner is reading his book Called to Serve: Stories of Men and Women Confronted by Vietnam War Draft at the 112th Street location.
Tom Weiner’s first book, Called to Serve: Stories of Men and Women Confronted by the Vietnam War Draft, features 30 testimonies representing the entire range of responses to being drafted during the Vietnam War. Each story is unique, but they all share the stress, the turmoil and the uncertainty at a critical stage of life and during very turbulent times – the late 60’s and early 70’s. Tom Weiner has chosen to include this wide range of responses to the draft and war in order to facilitate long overdue healing as each person presents his or her experience with rich detail and considerable back story so as to encourage empathy with each person’s plight.
Tom Weiner faced the Vietnam War draft after graduating college in June, 1971. After serving in the war, which is discussed in Called to Serve, he was able to pursue the Watson Fellowship for traveling, as well as studying alternative education in various countries. For the last 25 years he has been teaching 6th grade, as well as teaching inner city high school students. Tom Weiner is a social activist who addresses issues of fairness, seeking greater racial and socioeconomic diversity in his local Unitarian Society.
