Zadie Smith at Symphony Space to Benefit 826NYC
Acclaimed author Zadie Smith (On Beauty) will host this reading to celebrate the release of The Book of Other People (Penguin), a collection that she edited of new short stories by contemporary authors. A selection of the book’s contributors will read, including George Saunders (In Persuasion Nation), Vendela Vida (Let The Northern Lights Erase Your Name), and special guest Maggie Gyllenhaal, who will read Miranda July’s story “Roy Spivey.”
Here’s what the New York Times had to say about the book:
Whether they are old-fashioned narratives, playful improvisations or comic-strip-like tales told in pictures, these stories force us to re-evaluate that old chestnut “Character is destiny.” They remind us that an individual’s life is itself a narrative with a beginning, a middle and at least the intimations of an end.
All proceeds from the book and the event benefit free writing and tutoring programs for children at 826NYC. Book Culture will be selling copies throughout the evening, and Zadie Smith will sign books after the reading. Tickets for the event, being held at Symphony Space (W. 95th and Broadway), are $25 and can be purchased here.
