It's great to know that our independent booksellers are as passionate about selling their wares as we are about buying them. I hope you really do take on New York, whatever it takes!

Yes, that is exactly what we want. If we believe in the value of small businesses, diversity of ownership and distribution of goods and ideas then we should support social and governmental structures that contribute to their success. Small local businesses in towns and cities across the nation need support. Requiring us all to collect sales tax as suggested will help us. Keep in mind that we have virtually no sales outside our local zip code whereas a major internet vendor like Amazon is selling millions of dollars in books to NYS. I do think it's pretty simple. Each sale of a book should be taxed in the same way, whether the sales is transacted online or in a store. - Chris

Chris, that's exactly what amazon does. They collect sales tax in Washington state, where they have their offices but not in New York where they don't. Your online sales site collects in New York, but not in Washington. It sounds a bit hypocritical, if not deceptive, to omit these facts from your blog post. And, if New York passes a law to make stores in other states collect sales tax, other states surely will return the favor. Is that what you want? According to your logic, your online business should be collecting now for the benefit of Washington state and its counties. Thank you for raising this topic; it's not as simple as some people assume.

It isn't any different. Local governments everywhere should tax businesses fairly. When we are obliged to collect and remit sales tax to other states and counties we do so. Local taxes exist to benefit localities. - Chris
